Ale & Cider Festival, Martins Jerked Meat!

So, the plan was just a casual drink until we realised that the Ale & Cider society had a festival going on in the students union. Obviously how could we turn it down? For £10 at the entrance you get your entry, a free pint glass and 5 tickets for drinks of your choice. Which was amazing because they had everything! Mead, Wine, Ale, Cider and luckily for me an Ale that was more like a larger, I need the fizz. It was such a good experience, a huge change from the usual drinking scene with glammed up girls and scouting boys. It was just a very chilled out atmosphere, with a folk band on stage and everyone just having a good time, drinking and laughing. Amazing way to spend a Thursday night. 

Shakes!

The amazing American milkshake joint in Guildford's busy town centre has closed down! They used to make the best, creamiest milkshakes using different commercial cookies, chocolates, candies and sweets. I only ever had one the kinder bueno and it was so amazing. Chocolate, hazelnut, white chocolate, ice-cream and milk. So indulgent but so good. It's a shame when you see big businesses being bought out by large chain companies, which there is one down the road from this establishment. Goodbye shakes!

Student Lock In

Every year St. Davids 2 shopping centre holds a student lock in. Its supposed to be a chance for new students to get some cheap autumn wear, discounted food and free drinks where all stores had 20% off.  We saw through the plan, the students just got their loans and the shops wanted them to spend, spend and spend. Very well planned. The queue to get in was around 15 minutes and inside the noise from so many different dj's was unreal. The whole centre was jam packed, I couldn't even walk around H&M. The queue for the checkouts in nearly every store was about an hour long. Krispy Kreme were even offering 24 d'nuts for £10! So all in all, it was a nice evening out but definitely not a quality shopping trip. Disappointing as I had so much on the list, but I soon realised most stores had a 20% student discount anyway!

... We ditched shopping after finding out Nails inc. only had discounts on treatments and went for some cocktails instead! Peppermint have 2-4-1 on the most amazing cocktails ever. I tried a Thai Whisper and it was amazing. Lychee, coconut milk, vodka and I can't remember what else, but it was lovely! It was a fun girly night out, but not a shopping trip for sure! I have found a gorgeous Vintage boutique on Etsy. MyriadVintage. Very understated and very vintage!  I got in touch with the owner and to say thank you to my readers heres a give away! Ashley was kind enough to give to one of you luckies a gorgeous colour block maxi skirt. I might even try to enter myself, hahaha. I managed to grab a few extra minutes with Ashley for a short interview, heres what I found out!

Me: How did you get into Vintage fashion?
Ashley: Growing up my mom always took me along on her thrifting trips. I would pick items to wear and would tweak the ones I didn't like by light sewing. Over the years I have found some cool pieces and decided to make a business of it. In my city, vintage wear is nearly equal to normal retail.

Me: I love changing things to my personal taste! Where do you find inspiration for your items?
Ashley: Honestly, I use my personal taste for guidance. I look for pops of color, bold prints and texture. Anything that stands out on the rack at a quick glance. If I have to dig too hard, it is not for me! Most of my items are 1980s - early 90's.

Me: Such an iconic era. Are there any fashion icons you follow for ideas?
Ashley: There are many greats of the era, with unique and bold style but, I try to make sure I don't put myself in a box. For example Madonna's edgy and sometimes quirky style, love it!! But my pieces may or may not reflect this.

Me: Madonna is definitely a walking fashion statement! What do you believe makes a quality article of clothing?
Ashley: A quality article of clothing should not be damaged, stained, or worn beyond reasonable wear with consideration to the year. Essentially items should look as good as they did, when they were first made. Not all items are perfect, and for this reason I make not of imperfections on my listings. Not every customer is a perfectionist but, honesty and respect go a long way!!

Me: They do say honesty is always the best policy. What garments can we expect for A/W from MyriadVintage?
Ashley: I always go in search of certain categories of items, but tend to list as I find. I am looking to add more sequinned and beaded items, sweaters and blazers. Over the weekend some updates were made :)

Tutti Frutti

I touched on this sweet establishment previously. Tutti Frutti at Reading central station is run by a very sweet woman, we're yet to learn her name! Me and James stop off here for an ice-cream milkshake every time we pass through. Every time it is delicious! It's £5 for the two of us and she fills them right to the top. James usually gets Oreo but were always convinced to try something new. All her ice-creams are homemade, some classic flavours strawberry, chocolate and coconut. Then the newer WOAH ice-creams, Greek yoghurt, New York cheese cake, Ameretto with cherry. My god, I'm going to be so fat.
There was a problem with the card machine today, but she'd already made our shakes. No cash on us either. Crap.
Tutti Frutti trusted our loyalty from simply knowing they had a fantastic product and we were repeat customers. They gave us a personal tab and were paying on our next trip! We love being recognised and just the familiarity and friendly homey feeling you get from small businesses.
I even got a mini ice-cream cone because my milkshake cup wasn't full! How much nicer can you get! Her staff are genuine and the place always has someone coming to say hi.

Go Grease Lightning.

As some of you may know, I was in Grease the musical a while back. But flicking through some facebook pictures I reminisced over the many hours I had dancing and singing and for a short while, trying and failing to act. Although I did only have 5/6 lines. For you Grease fans out there I played chacha. At first I was chuffed that my audition got me a speaking part which I never thought I could get. Until I watched the film back and realised I basically was casted as the slag. Being a family production my outfits were never too revealing, thank god! We began rehearsing in September after auditioning the previous school year. As we got closer to the end of November, practise became a nightly routine.

When the costumes came I was stupidly excited to dress up in overly flamboyant glittery dresses and full on make-up. Dress rehearsals came and I loved my dress. A gorgeous, red sequined gown for the ball and some back of my wardrobe clothes for the day scenes. Shamefully I forgot my lines one day, I think it was because my brother was in the audience and I was trying desperately not to mess up... but I did, huge fail. My heart raced and my fingers began to sweat, but a quick rescue as I looked down to the band and they smiled and encouraged me through. That wasn't going to happen again, for the remaining 3 shows of 5.

                

On the Friday evening show, the male lead hosted an after party at his house, to which I was cordially invited. Being just shy of the age limit I stuck to the home made cocktails and alcho-pops. Nevertheless the whole experience was amazing and I urge anyone feeling too embarrassed to try out, to just go for it! Everyone else that is on set with you or behind the scenes aren't laughing so who cares? I was nervous about auditioning as I didn't have any close friends to try with, but I made loads of new friends afterwards. Every night was a full house of 400 and I felt like such a pro with my hands free microphone stuck to my face, even it was only for 20 minutes.

Stealing from the needy.

So upon catching the train today I noticed this horrific sign.

I may have a bias view on this being a student and living on my saved up pennies and 'designer' DIY accessories. But I'm pretty sure this is stealing? I mean, what would Robin hood say.

I found this at Newport Train station, where situated next to the main entrance is a lost and found office. From my experience scrimping and saving for my laptop, it'd be a painful day to find I had to pay after misplacing it. If you find something, its NOT finders keepers and you need to give it back! Criminals ask for you to buy your items back if they find it. I understand there are admin fees but surely not if they are going up in price?

Angry rant of the day over.

I've been beginning to notice, big finger bling is coming into fashion. And if it doesn't, fuck it, because I'm loving it. I love ASOS and have found loads of items that aren't on the high street and so looks more original (e.g The awkward your wearing the same outfit).

The only problem I find with cheap rings is that I can only wear them for a short while, I get the copper stain otherwise!

The late Neil Armstrong, 1969-2012.
Will be remembered as a hero, always.

Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon on 20th July 1969, passed away yesterday following complications after heart surgery. As we all pay respects to a great man and his family, science continues with the gift he gave to them.

The US astronaut, who had an 'ice cool attitude' was born and raised in Ohio, 1930. After flying with his father for the first time aged six years he would spark a passion for flying. I'm pretty sure I was caught up in barbies when I was six, oh dear. Reporters say he stayed modest through all his fame and heroics and never allowed himself to get caught up in the glamour of space exploration.

So my question to you is, what is your lifelong passion? Your dream of all dreams that you want, need, wish and must make come true. What was your childhood dream and are you fulfilling it?

I'm only 19 years, so to some eyes I'm still a child and as I sleep these are my childhood dreams. But when I was younger I wanted nothing more than to be a scientist. I'd play pretend and beg my mum to supply me with all types of kids science books and project packs. Although I believe she started me on the path, she made me a super nerd. Math books upon Math books and then English and Science. They literally and I mean literally were never ending.
I hated being the nerdy kid, but now I relish in it. I'm always wondering how things work and take a genuine interest to everyone's career or course choice. From how to contour your make-up to look like Kim Kardashian (Which I'm still working on by the way, I want that figure and eye brows. Anyway) to calculating the foundations of a building so it wont collapse in on itself.

I'm also grateful to her for not allowing me to be one of those girls who don't know that Asia is a continent, not a country! haha :P

I aspire to try my hand at everything and anything and right now, being a student, it doesn't make it so hard! In June, I worked the Royal Ascot and got to see the Queen ride past in her majesty's carriage! Next at the Oval cricket grounds in Vauxhall, London. For £500 you get the best view, a 5 course meal spread over 6 hours and an open bar, wow. Working the a VIP roof top is a lovely, cushy job, where you can see the rich rub shoulders and get pissed from 10am to 6pm. Most of them leave by 3pm though, with the sunny day they had they were all beyond walking let alone watching cricket.

So back to my big dream! I've followed through and I'm chuffed. In the 3rd world over a billion people have bad or no eye sight. For them this is a big, big problem. Adults can't to go work and so the whole family suffers. My plan? To graduate as close to top of the class as I can.. then.. establish a name for myself in the industry so I can get funding and other opticians to join. Then were in the 3rd world saving vision for all!

That's right, I'm your modern day wonder woman. Well, all my modesty just when out the window. In all seriousness, I just hope I can make a difference, after all I've already got so much. Learnt so much, experienced so much and most importantly seen so much! (And I'm far from 20/20, talk about blind!) But for now, head down, degree on the mind.

So, in the theme of public services (Armstrong was a Navy fighter) today I dressed to show my respects to a global hero. Glad rags aside, I sported tan combats, a camo cardigan with military detail, American flag coloured bands and an over sized tee. Quickly ran the GHD's over my hair, nothing too over the top. Adding some detail, painted blue toes and matching flipper flops but I was trying not to go overboard here, so splashed in some girly lilac, on my nails to match a dainty ring. There it is, girly military. Or in my opinion anyway. What about your military looks, send some snaps?

Tip of the day - When you have hunger pangs throughout the day and your trying to slim down, grab a glass of water. Generally, when you feel a craving your body is just thirsty and doesn't know how to tell you!

Olympic Madness!

I'm assuming 99% of people reading my blog will have watched the Olympics. It was breathtaking! Record smashed and the best bit? It was literally down the road, urmm 30 minutes in the car?

A few bad points, the hilarious NBC fails? Oh dear NBC how did you not recognise Evander Holyfield outside Buckingham Palace! I'm terrible at celeb spotting, but the olympics is star gazing prime time! Maybe they were just overwhelmed with the sheer amount of talent floating around London, eh! Also, I was slightly annoyed when the BBC pronounced German/Vietnamese gymnast Ngyuen wrong. But then again maybe they did do the research but just couldn't say it, maybe its just because I'm being protective of my Vietnamese heritage!

Lastly, why are the Paralympics separate, in my opinion it should be one giant extravaganza. I don't know so much about training and fitness really, but wouldn't it be better if it was all produced together and allowed the Athletes some time in between heats and finals, to have a little rest or train? That way they all get the same amount of press too.

The new flag hoisted over 10 Downing street and the new logo raised had such little noise, I didn't even know they were a symbol of the Paralympics? I want to hear more, see more and feel it as big a part and of summer 2012!

The opening ceremony was AMAZING. Brilliant choreography for the history of Britain. Sir Paul McCartney, if I may say, brought an excellent performance to the table. It really felt like a classic british panto with the crowed participation. And Bean?! Fucking fantastic! Danny Boyle

I bow my hat to you sir, great job.

Although my only bug was the musical section, in which there was some love story between two youths my age prancing around texting? To other Countries it must have seemed they were just being rude, haha! It was pretty hard to follow. The house didn't make much sense and some of the music was not Britain's best! For me I wanted some more Welsh! The likes of Shirley Bassy and Tom Jones, thats not unusual?

But I must say a big huge thank you to my boyfriend, who thought he would hate the ceremony, set up a cosey sofa, brought up snacks and plugged in the surround sound. I really felt as though I was there! I'm surprised the neighbours didn't complain about the bass, but I guess they probably appreciated the enthusiasm! We both really enjoyed our evening, even if there were thousands of athletes to greet!

Working for the Olympics was a fantastic opportunity, I literally met people from around the world - Australia, Nigeria, South Africa, Japan, Mexico, America. I couldn't get tickets as they were either sold out or too expensive. So my personal ticket to the games.... pour some pints! Oh yes, Heineken all day, everyday. The punters loved it and I stank of it! There was beer flowing, food everywhere and even Sushi on Japanese match days! Talk about hosting!

Hoping to spot an athlete or even work close to one, I think I was dreaming a bit. As the days went on I was losing hope at getting any where near and I even starting missing some events because of work, this wasn't working out quite as I had planned! But then, my awesome manager let me and my new Aussie friend Steph sneak into the arena. And there we were, a HUGE crowed, Wembley stadium was packed! Women's final, USA had won and the Americans were there in force, the audience went electric and the rawr shook through our bellys! We were overwhelmed to say the least. Cameras out, we got a few sneaky pictures, cheered, shouted, laughed, ate mini dounoughts and soaked in the atmosphere.

Walking to the changing room, rushing past all the people trying to leave the stadium we began to regret staying behind. The tube was going to be packed and it had already been a long days graft! But upon signing out we had the biggest buzz! Everyone was cheering, singing (some pissed slurring) but it was amazing. dounoughts out again and got to know some people. It was an awesome shift and I wouldn't trade that experience for the world! Shame I didn't get into the audience but hey second best wasn't so bad after all!

But you know that feeling you have when you've truly made a new friend? Well I found that in Steph, but she goes back to Aus in December! I hope we keep in touch and wish her the best of luck for her new job and travels!
